This talk will introduce GraphQL from the ground up. We’ll go over what it is, what problems it solves, and what it looks like. We’ll talk about what setting up a working GraphQL endpoint looks like, and how it simplifies data fetching on the client. And along the way we’ll touch on the incredibly rich ecosystem of tools that make all of these things simpler.
After a brief stint in the Air Force, Adam began his career as a software developer here in Oklahoma City. In the more than decade since, he’s coded over a wide variety of languages, technologies and frameworks. When he’s not coding, his interests include fitness, reading, and of course being a husband and father.

We’re getting back to our roots with this meetup: It’s a double-header feature Jesse Harlin and Vance Lucas as the Javascript Dragon Warriors.
ES6 Templating and Echotag
Right now you’re probably underusing the raw dragon-power of es6 templates. Thankfully Vance has written a library that can bring your karate to the next level.
Apollo and GraphQL
You’ve heard of them, but what are they? Are they mysterious ninja assassins waiting to change how you handle data in your app? Maybe, we can’t answer that because you’ll have to join us in-person or online to find out.
What we can do is show you the roles of what Graph QL IS what it DOES and how to get you some. Then learn how to uppercut your next web app with some of the amazing pieces of technology that have built up around Graph Ql.
Vance Lucas is a seasoned programmer with over 17 years of web programming experience dating back to 1998. Vance is a full stack polyglot programmer who currently uses JavaScript/node.js, PHP, and Ruby for most projects. Vance is the co-founder of the Techlahoma Foundation, Oklahoma City JavaScript User Group (OKC.js), and co-organizer of the annual ThunderPlains Developer Conference in Oklahoma City.
Jesse is a business owner (simiancraft dev shop) and an experienced full-stack developer at the forefront of JavaScript and front-end technologies. He has a deep understanding of multiple programming languages, libraries, patterns, and software development process. He’s all about JavaScript, Synthesizers, and Amanda Harlin. @5imian + simiancraft.com

This talk will introduce webpack in the most gentle, un-intimidating way possible. We’ll start with no config file, and build the simplest imagineable app. From that starting point we’ll see just how easy it is to add code splitting, chunk management, bundle visualization, and finish with some cool JavaScript toys like Babel and TypeScript.

Over the past year, Dale has been working with his team at SCA to build an automated smoke test system that ensures their applications are loading and performing correctly. They built the tests using Protractor and they perform various UI tests that verify the primary functions of the application are performing correctly. The tests run every few minutes and alert them if any issues are found. Dale will be expanding on the lightning talk he gave at the OKC# March meeting and will be walking through how to set up Protractor, create the tests, and set them to run automatically.
Dale Spoonemore has been in the software business for over 11 years with most of that time spent coming up with schemes to break software. He’s tested applications built using pretty much every language/framework out there across desktop/web/mobile and currently heads up the QA efforts at Surgical Care Affiliates where he spends most of his time testing, creating SOX-compliant test documentation, and writing automated tests for their Angular web apps. He’s also an avid gardener/“urban farmer” and blogs about his journey towards growing as much food as possible for his family of 6 at seedtospoon.net.

Did you know that your web browser has a full suite of built-in JavaScript debugging tools? With the developer tools in Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, you can debug JavaScript on the fly with breakpoints, watch expressions, an interactive REPL with autocomplete, and much more. Learn how to troubleshoot bugs and memory leaks like a pro, armed with the same web browser you already use every day - no extra plugins or downloads required.

WebAssembly is an emerging standard which defines a compact, efficient, safe, and portable compiler target for the Web. This talk introduces WebAssembly: what it is and what problems it is designed to solve. Next, an in-depth tour of WebAssembly: how to compile it, what it looks like, how it works, how the engine compiles it into efficient machine code, and how it interfaces with JavaScript. If you care about alternative programming languages, compiling to the Web, performance, or you like using powerful JS libraries and frameworks, come learn
about WebAssembly.

Let Electron take you where no JavaScript has been before…
We use JavaScript on the client-side and server-side. Now, with Electron, we can take JavaScript offline. Electron uses Chromium and Node, and is accessible across multiple operating systems. Electron has been used to build apps like Slack, Atom, and Visual Studio Code.
This talk will teach all you need to know to start writing your first offline apps with JavaScript and Electron.

You’re at the hip new Javascript party, chilling out with your friends when it happens. Everyone’s buzzing about the groovy new things in Js and you feel left out. Jenny’s into monads, Jimmy’s into tree shaking and Bobby Dreamboat won’t stop going on about streams and schedulers! OMG like whatever!
In desperation you dive into the freshy-freshest new file in town. Its written in React.js and its straight outta tha’ githubs. …But what’s inside of this file? This isn’t your grandpa’s JavaScript, its a zany new flavor but it reads like hieroglyphics to you! Where’s all the dollar signs? Say What?!?
Good thing you picked up this month’s issue of Javascript Beat! This issue, we’ve got the inside scoop on a hot new ensemble calling themselves “The New JavaScripts on the Block”. Its a tell-all backstage pass, and they’re loose lipped on their juicy new JavaScript secrets! They’re the new standard for modern Javascripting, and you gotta get in on these hot takes.
As a matter of fact, modern Javascript looks really different than even a few years ago. Download any boilerplate for a project and there’s a lot to learn to even get started! We’re going to interview each of the 5 band members, and learn what they like most about Javascript today. Kevin knows all about those quirky dot files in your project and Billy Bundler knows all about modern build systems. Jimmy Streamboat loves schedulers and stream programming while Johnny Lambda loves immutable functions and virtual DOMs! Mikey Monad can help us understand some of the funky ES6 code we’ll find in any hot new source file today, and don’t think of talking to any of these guys if you’re not familiar with modern unit testing strategies! As if!
This Tuesday it is a whirlwind tour of what-the-heck-is-even-happening in this hipster-written boilerplate making the twitter rounds right now. Don’t be left out! Meet the band and be the real center of attention at your next Javascript party!

In this talk, we’re going to cover how WebSockets work. About 80% of this talk will be a live coding demo where we’re going to build a simple chat app using WebSockets with the help of the Socket.io node library - all live coding, explaining everything on the way. In the end, we’ll have an application similar to websockets.thesocietea.org. The rest of the time will be dedicated to explaining the WebSocket protocol, how it differs from standard HTTP, and why you should (and maybe shouldn’t) use WebSockets in some of your projects today.
